Water is filtered as a step in removing suspended solids. There are several methods of filtration. Ozone Solutions works primarily with Sand, Membrane, Reverse Osmosis, Ultrafiltration, and Filter Press.
Sand Filtration works by water moving vertically through sand which often has a layer of activated carbon or anthracite coal above the sand. Membrane Filtration is widely used due to its simplicity. The membrane allows selective fluids (permeate) to pass through, while it retains other fluids (retentate). Reverse Osmosis (RO) is an integral part of industrial water management plans to reach zero liquid discharge goals. The liquid is forced under pressure through a nonporous membrane in the opposite direction to osmosis. Most salts and uncharged molecules are retained by the membrane and, therefore, permeate is much purer water and retentate becomes significantly more concentrated. Filter Presses are used by injecting the slurry needed to be dewatered into the center of the press and filling up each chamber. The pressure inside the system will increase due to the formation of thick sludge while the liquid is filtered out through the filter cloths by adding stream water.
