Ozone has a major impact on Groundwater Remediation

Perhaps one of the most noteworthy products we offer at Ozone Solutions, Inc is our RMT remediation systems. Ozone, which occurs quite readily in nature, turns out to be the second most powerful sterilant in the world. To date, there has not been a single bacterium, virus, mold or cyst discovered that can withstand the power of ozone. Furarium Oxysporum Sterilization by Ozone

F. oxysporum can cause disease in nearly every agriculturally important plant. It is lethal to plants and when the plant shows any sign of infection, it is already too late, and the plant will die. Unfortunately, for many planters, once Fusarium oxysporum is established in soil it may be incredibly tough to eradicate [1].

Methyl bromide (CH3 Br) is frequently used as a fumigant to sterilize microbial activity in the soil. But using methyl bromide because of its long-term effects on the ozone layer, human health and safety concerns has many concerns.

In this case it is necessary to use safe and environmental friendly disinfectant. Ozone,  because of its incredible disinfection capacity, and its green and environmentally-friendly properties can prevent all of the concerns.

Ozone can be injected into the soil and in this case can sterile the soil. Takayama et al. have shown that by using 20 g/m3 ozone for 20 minutes, it is possible to reach over 80% Fusarium sterilization in the soil. Other researches have proved 4 log reduction of Fusarium using aqueous ozone [2].

Ozone use for Disinfection of Murine Norovirus

Noroviruses are the major etiological agent of gastroenteritis in all age groups worldwide and are transmitted via fecal-oral route. As important waterborne and food-borne pathogens, they are included on the U.S. EPA Contaminant [1]. Water can be contaminated by Norovirus containing feces released from either symptomatic or asymptomatic patients. Noroviruses have been linked to many waterborne disease outbreaks in the U.S.  They have been detected in sewage effluent and in ambient water [2].

Noroviruses cause a gastroenteritis, which usually lasts 24 to 48 hours.  Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

Owing to its high effectiveness of ozone as a strong oxidant and lack of residue after disinfection, ozone can be used for both surface and groundwater disinfection. Several studies have proven ozone effectiveness on removing the Norovirus. It has been shown that ozone eradicates the Norovirus.

Ozone for treating petroleum hydrocarbons in unsaturated soils and water

Petroleum products are made from crude oil which can contaminate the environment. Because there are many different chemicals in crude oil and in other petroleum products, it is not practical to measure each one separately. However, it is useful to measure the total amount of hydrocarbons which is referred to as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). Chemicals that occur in TPH include hexane, benzene, toluene, xylenes, naphthalene, fluorene, other constituents of gasoline,  jet fuels, and of other petroleum products.

Gasoline at the gas stations, accidental spill or leak of petroleum products can contaminate ground water, soil and weather. TPH components can evaporate and enter the lungs. You may be sick by drinking water from a well contaminated with TPH. Children may be exposed by playing in soil contaminated with TPH [1].

TPH can cause headaches and dizziness at high levels in the air. Another compound can cause a nerve disorder called “peripheral neuropathy,” consisting of numbness in the feet and legs. Other TPH compounds can cause effects on the blood, immune system, lungs, skin, and eyes. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that one TPH compound (benzene) is carcinogenic to humans [1].

Ozone will oxidize TPHs to carbon dioxide, water and oxygen. The green nature of ozone and its economic aspects has made ozone the best candidate for TPH removal.  Ozone Solutions has a long history of providing soil and groundwater remediation systems to remove TPH [2-4]. The products can produce ozone in a diverse range from 20g/h- 5000g/h. Some of the products are stationary and some of the products are mobile trailers which can be dragged for any site remediation. What is ozone?

Ozone, (O3), sometimes called “activated oxygen”, contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms we normally breathe. Ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors. Interestingly ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact the “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from nature’s creation of ozone. However, we are probably most familiar with ozone from reading about the “ozone layer” that circles the planet above the earth’s atmosphere. Here ozone is created by the sun’s ultra-violet rays. This serves to protect us from the ultra-violet radiation.

Our Web-based Remote Remediation Monitoring System utilizing our proprietary Remediation Operation System Equipment (ROSE) technology, we are able to see how a system responds to subtle changes in site conditions and make changes to the system remotely. Ozone Use for Petroleum Hydrocarbons

Fuel BarrelsThe upcoming 2012 conference of the Integrated Petroleum Environmental Consortium (the 19th Annual), to be held Oct 30 – Nov 1, will feature two sessions regarding the success of ozone in soil remediation applications regarding petroleum hydrocarbons.

The first session, entitled “SUCCESSFUL OZONE APPLICATIONS WITH PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS” will be held that Thursday morning.  It is to be presented by Piper Environmental Group and will cover ozone effectiveness for in-situ and ex-situ remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Another session will follow shortly after, entitled “IN-SITU CHEMICAL OXIDATION OZONE SPARGING AT A PETROLEUM HYDROCARBON-IMPACTED SITE”.  It is to be presented by Jim Leu and will cover ozone effectiveness on hydrocarbons at a former natural gas processing station.

MTBE & TBA Reduction Using Ozone

Here’s the story.  A while back I had a customer who wanted to know if ozone would reduce MTBE levels in water.  He wanted this data so he could bid a remediation job effectively.  Our concern was, this was DIRTY water.  We didn’t know if the ozone would be consumed by the organics and other loading factors prior to the MTBE.  So, he sent me 5 gallons of water, I tested it in my sample tube, and what you see below is our results!

This was Great data.  It was wonderful that the customer was willing to pay for TBA testing along with the MTBE testing.  This showed the relationship between MTBE & TBA.  Much of the MTBE was broken down into TBA initially, then the TBA was broken down further.

Conclusion and Application

The data indicates that ozone was very effective in our lab testing. After this successful lab test, the data inspired an on-site pilot test with our WS-3010, which led to the eventual implementation of a “pump and treat” ozone remediation system.  Today this system is in use at a water flow rate 5 – 10 GPM.
